John Collier – Lady Godiva – Desk Mat

John Collier’s Lady Godiva (c. 1898) brings one of England’s most enduring legends to life in a scene of extraordinary beauty and quiet courage. According to tradition, the noblewoman rode through the streets of Coventry in protest against the oppressive burdens placed upon its people.

With her head bowed and her long hair falling around her, Godiva sits upon a magnificent white horse adorned in richly patterned red cloth. Collier’s masterful contrast between the vulnerability of the figure, the strength of the horse and the stillness of the medieval city transforms an act of defiance into a hauntingly intimate moment.

Carefully adapted for this large panoramic desk mat, the original painting is preserved at the heart of the composition, with the surrounding medieval architecture and cobbled streets extended to suit the wide format. The result allows the entire scene to unfold across the desk while retaining the atmosphere, detail and character of Collier’s celebrated work.
