John William Waterhouse – The Lady of Shalott – Victorian Broadside Desk Mat
John William Waterhouse’s The Lady of Shalott (1888) is one of the most haunting images of the Pre-Raphaelite tradition, inspired by Alfred, Lord Tennyson’s celebrated Arthurian poem.
Condemned by a mysterious curse to experience the world only through reflections, the Lady finally defies her fate and leaves her isolated tower. Waterhouse captures her final journey towards Camelot, seated in a richly adorned boat surrounded by autumnal reeds and dark, still waters. Her distant expression, the flickering candles and the intricate tapestry create an atmosphere of extraordinary beauty, melancholy and impending tragedy.
“The curse is come upon me,” cried The Lady of Shalott.
This specially designed Victorian-inspired literary broadside brings together Waterhouse’s painting and Tennyson’s evocative words. The original artwork is carefully preserved within an elegant composition featuring warm cream tones, restrained gold detailing and classical typography — a celebration of the relationship between art and literature.
Created for a large panoramic desk mat, the design transforms an everyday workspace into a small tribute to Victorian painting, poetry and storytelling.
