William Morris is one of those designers whose work has become so familiar that it is easy to stop noticing just how radical it once was.

Curling leaves, intertwined stems, birds, flowers and repeating branches now seem almost synonymous with the Arts and Crafts movement. Yet when Morris began designing wallpapers in the 1860s, he was helping to rethink what decoration could be: not simply something added to a room, but part of a wider argument about nature, craftsmanship, work and everyday life.

Designer, poet, novelist, publisher, conservationist and socialist, Morris spent much of his life questioning the effects of industrialisation on both people and the objects surrounding them. Wallpaper was only one part of that larger project — but it became one of the most enduring.

From Oxford to Red House

William Morris was born in Walthamstow in 1834 into a prosperous family. He studied at Oxford, where his friendships with figures including Edward Burne-Jones helped shape his fascination with medieval art, literature and architecture.

After briefly training as an architect, Morris increasingly turned towards decorative art. One of the decisive projects in that change was Red House, the home designed for Morris and his wife Jane by his friend Philip Webb. Completed around 1860, it became something of a laboratory for the ideas that would later define the Arts and Crafts movement: architecture, furniture, painting and decoration conceived as parts of a unified whole rather than as unrelated additions.

In 1861 Morris established Morris, Marshall, Faulkner & Co. with a circle of artists and designers including Burne-Jones, Dante Gabriel Rossetti and Webb. The firm produced stained glass, furniture, embroidery, textiles and decorative objects. Following a reorganisation in 1875, it became Morris & Co.

Wallpaper would become one of its most distinctive products.

A different way of looking at nature

Morris loved plants, but his wallpapers were never straightforward botanical illustrations.

He did not simply copy a flower or branch and place it against a background. Instead, he observed the growth, rhythm and structure of natural forms and transformed them into pattern.

The V&A notes that his approach differed both from highly illusionistic Victorian floral wallpapers and from designers who reduced nature according to rigid geometric formulas. Morris’s abstraction grew from close observation of the curves and structures of real plants. His sources also included medieval manuscripts, tapestries, early printed books and herbals.

That combination is one reason Morris patterns feel simultaneously natural and artificial.

A willow leaf is recognisably a willow leaf.

But it has been organised into a carefully constructed system of diagonals, curves, overlaps and repeats.

The result is nature transformed into ornament.

The secret is the repeat

One of Morris’s greatest abilities was not drawing individual flowers but designing repetition.

Wallpaper has no natural beginning or end. A successful pattern must continue across a wall without constantly revealing where one rectangular unit finishes and another begins.

Morris became exceptionally good at disguising that underlying structure.

Branches cross the boundaries of the repeat. Leaves lead the eye diagonally into neighbouring sections. Large motifs are balanced by smaller forms, while foreground and background patterns interweave.

The eye keeps moving rather than settling on an obvious grid.

This is particularly clear in his mature wallpapers of the 1870s, where designs such as Jasmine, Marigold and Wreath developed increasingly complex layers of scrolling foliage.

It is an interesting paradox: the more carefully Morris constructed the repeat, the less obvious the construction becomes.

Trellis: where it began

Morris’s first wallpaper design was Trellis, created in 1862.

Its inspiration was remarkably ordinary: the rose trellises in the garden at Red House.

The design already contains several ideas that would remain central to Morris’s work. Plants climb across the surface while the underlying trellis provides structure. Birds — drawn by Philip Webb — introduce movement and irregularity. The pattern is flattened and stylised rather than attempting to create the illusion of a real garden growing out of the wall.

It established a principle Morris would return to repeatedly: decoration could remind us of nature without pretending to be nature.

Daisy and the influence of medieval art

One of Morris’s earliest published wallpapers, Daisy, appeared in 1864.

Its small flowers and flattened forms reflected both his love of the English countryside and his fascination with medieval decorative art. The V&A has traced the central floral motif to imagery resembling the flower-strewn backgrounds found in late-medieval manuscripts and textiles.

Compared with his later work, Daisy is relatively simple.

But it already shows Morris moving away from pictorial wallpaper towards something closer to a continuous decorative field.

Rather than looking through the wall at an illusionistic scene, the viewer becomes aware of the wall itself as a patterned surface.

Jasmine: pattern becomes more complex

By the 1870s Morris had become much more confident in wallpaper design.

Jasmine, created in 1872, uses intertwined layers of foliage to create depth without conventional perspective. The pattern seems to grow continuously across the surface, but its apparent spontaneity is supported by a tightly controlled repeat.

This kind of interwoven vegetation became enormously influential.

Morris was no longer merely decorating a background with plants. The vegetation became the entire structure of the design.

Marigold: complexity without a focal point

Marigold, designed in 1875, demonstrates another important Morris principle: avoiding a dominant central motif.

Instead, leaves and flowers spread evenly across the surface.

There is no obvious picture to look at.

That makes the design unusually adaptable. A section can disappear behind furniture or continue around a corner without destroying the composition.

Marigold was also used for textiles, illustrating how Morris increasingly thought in terms of repeating surface design rather than separating wallpaper, fabric and decoration into entirely different artistic categories.

Wild Tulip and the garden at Kelmscott

By the 1880s Morris’s patterns had become increasingly rich.

Wild Tulip, registered in 1884, combines small tulips with larger peonies and scrolling stems. Morris’s daughter May later associated the design strongly with the family’s country home, Kelmscott Manor, where both flowers grew in the garden.

This connection between real landscape and decorative pattern is important.

Morris was not inventing an imaginary botanical world from nothing.

He repeatedly transformed plants he knew, grew and observed into ornament.

Willow Bough: making movement from leaves

Perhaps no Morris wallpaper demonstrates this better than Willow Bough, designed in 1887.

Its ingredients are extraordinarily simple: green willow leaves, brown branches and a pale ground.

Yet the diagonal stems weave across one another so effectively that the pattern seems to flow endlessly across the wall.

The William Morris Gallery describes Willow Bough as one of his most enduring wallpaper designs and notes that it has remained in production since 1887. It developed ideas Morris had already explored in his earlier Willow pattern, but with more naturalistic curling leaves and a stronger sense of movement.

It is also a useful reminder that Morris did not need spectacular flowers or exotic imagery to create an interesting design.

A commonplace branch could be enough.

The artistry lay in how it repeated.

Wallpaper was still a complicated craft

The apparent naturalness of Morris’s patterns can disguise how technically demanding they were to manufacture.

His wallpapers were generally produced using traditional block-printing processes, with different carved blocks used to apply individual colours. Production was subcontracted for many years to the specialist wallpaper manufacturer Jeffrey & Co.

Some designs became astonishingly complex.

The wallpaper Morris created for St James’s Palace required 68 separate printing blocks to produce its large repeat.

That workmanship contributed to their beauty — but also to their price.

And here lies one of the fascinating contradictions in Morris’s career.

Beauty for everyone — but not always affordable

Morris wanted to challenge a world in which industrial production separated workers from creative, satisfying labour.

He believed surroundings mattered. A useful object did not have to be ugly, and a beautiful object did not have to exist purely as luxury.

His famous advice was to have nothing in the home that one did not know to be useful or believe to be beautiful.

Yet Morris & Co.’s labour-intensive products were often expensive.

The complex hand-printing and skilled craftsmanship Morris valued inevitably made many of his wallpapers more accessible to prosperous artistic and middle-class households than to the workers whose conditions increasingly concerned him.

That tension should not really be hidden. It became part of the wider problem Morris wrestled with throughout his life: how could genuinely satisfying, beautiful work exist in an industrial economy without becoming a luxury available only to the wealthy?

His later commitment to socialist politics grew partly from questions like these.

Morris was not simply “anti-machine”

It is tempting to reduce Morris to a simple story in which handcraft is good and machines are bad.

His position was more complicated.

What troubled him most was production that reduced human beings to repetitive labour while producing objects he considered ugly and disposable. The important issue was not merely whether a machine had been used, but what kind of work and society the method of production created.

That makes Morris unexpectedly relevant to contemporary discussions about automation, mass production and the value of creative work.

More than wallpaper

Morris’s interest in pattern extended far beyond walls.

He designed textiles, carpets, tapestries, embroidery and books, and Morris & Co. became one of the most influential decorative-arts firms of the nineteenth century.

One of his most famous designs, Strawberry Thief of 1883, was created as a furnishing textile rather than a wallpaper. Its birds and strawberries were inspired by thrushes stealing fruit from the garden at Kelmscott Manor.

Late in life Morris also founded the Kelmscott Press, applying the same concern for proportion, ornament, materials and craftsmanship to the printed book.

In other words, wallpaper was part of something much larger.

Morris was interested in the whole visual environment of everyday life.

Why do William Morris patterns still look modern?

Perhaps the most remarkable thing about these designs is how easily they move between periods.

They can appear completely at home in a Victorian interior, yet the same pattern can work on a contemporary wall, textile, accessory or piece of homeware.

Part of that durability comes from Morris’s subject matter.

Leaves, branches, flowers and birds do not belong to a particular technological era.

But the deeper reason may be structural.

His best designs balance apparently opposing qualities:

dense detail with clear rhythm

repetition with variation

abstraction with recognisable nature

historical influence with original design

decoration with underlying order

That balance prevents them from becoming merely nostalgic.

They still function as good pattern.

A design philosophy that outlived its century

William Morris died in 1896, but his ideas travelled far beyond his own lifetime.

His work helped reshape attitudes towards wallpaper and domestic decoration, contributed enormously to the development of the Arts and Crafts movement and influenced generations of designers concerned with craftsmanship, materials and the relationship between beauty and daily life.

More than a century later, perhaps the most useful way to understand Morris is not as the creator of a particular “Victorian look”.

He was asking a much bigger question:

What would the objects around us look like if we cared equally about beauty, usefulness, materials and the people who made them?

The answer he developed through leaves, flowers, books, textiles and wallpaper still feels surprisingly current.

If you love vintage nature illustrations, you’ve probably admired the work of Adolphe Millot — even if you didn’t know his name.

Millot was a French illustrator, painter, and naturalist from the late 1800s who created some of the most beautiful and scientifically accurate illustrations for the famous Larousse Encyclopedia. 🌍📚

His artworks — featuring butterflies, birds, flowers, insects, and more — were not only stunning but also educational. At a time before color photography, his illustrations helped people visualize the natural world in vivid detail. 🌿✨

Some of his most beloved pieces include:
🦋 Papillons (Butterflies)
🌺 Fleurs (Flowers)
🦜 Oiseaux (Birds)
🐚 Coquillages (Shells)

These plates are now popular as posters, prints, and decor — a testament to how timeless Millot’s vision truly was.

Step into a world of elegance and harmony with the exquisite Japanese floral wallpaper designs of George Ashdown Audsley. 🌿✨

Audsley, a 19th-century architect and artist, was deeply inspired by Japanese art and design long before it became a trend in the West. His floral wallpaper patterns blend botanical precision with stylized beauty — capturing the spirit of Japanese aesthetics with breathtaking detail.

These designs aren’t just decoration — they’re a bridge between cultures, celebrating nature’s quiet poetry through chrysanthemums, cherry blossoms, and winding vines in perfect symmetry. 🌺🌀

Whether you're a designer, historian, or simply love timeless beauty, Audsley's work offers a fresh reminder of how art can be both ornamental and meaningful.

A carnival of sin, a paradise of dreams, a nightmare whispered in oil and brushstroke…
The Garden of Earthly Delights by Hieronymus Bosch is less a painting, more a fevered vision stitched together by a prophet or madman.

On the left, Eden dawns like a lullaby — pale skies and mythical beasts, Adam receiving Eve beneath God’s serene hand. But don’t be fooled. Innocence here is but a breath before the storm.

In the center, humanity blooms and bursts — a kaleidoscope of naked revelers tangled in oversized strawberries, birds with eyes like secrets, and fountains shaped like riddles. It is desire unchained, joy teetering on the edge of delirium.

And then the right panel: hell yawns wide, an opera of torment sung in shrieks. A pig in a nun’s veil beckons. A man becomes an instrument. Light dies in the furnace of folly.

Bosch didn’t paint a moment. He painted eternity. A triptych of temptation, pleasure, and ruin — as if the soul of the world were laid bare across wooden panels.

This is not art you simply look at. This is art that looks back.

This famous engraving by German Renaissance artist Albrecht Dürer is one of the most studied prints in Western art history. Created in 1513, it’s part of a trio of master engravings often referred to as Dürer’s "Meisterstiche" (master prints), alongside Melencolia I and Saint Jerome in His Study. In Knight, Death and the Devil, a heavily armored knight rides through a dark and treacherous landscape. To his side, Death holds up an hourglass — a reminder of mortality — while the Devil follows menacingly behind. Despite these threats, the knight remains calm and resolute, symbolizing moral fortitude and Christian virtue in the face of fear, temptation, and the inevitability of death. The work is often interpreted as an allegory of stoic courage and faith. Some scholars believe Dürer was inspired by the writings of Erasmus or classical philosophy, where the "Christian knight" represents an ideal moral life, undistracted by earthly concerns.Dürer’s technical skill is also on full display — just look at the detail in the armor, the textures, and the stark contrast between light and shadow.

A powerful example of how art can combine technical brilliance with deep philosophical meaning.
